Alfred P. Yanni




Alfred P. Yanni, 96, of Hillside/Elizabeth, NJ passed away on Friday, December 29, 2017 at the Bridgeway Care and Rehab Center in Bridgewater, NJ where he resided for the past year.

Devoted Father of Linda Barrick (Robert-deceased), Geraldine Singletary, Alfred DeFurianni (Susan), Patricia Dinella (Donald) and the Late Thomas Yanni. Former Husband of the Late Carmela L. Yanni. Loving Grandfather of Kristen, Carissa, Brian, Timothy, Christopher, Cecilia and Alexandra and Great-Grandfather of Emily and Giovanni (Johnny).

Al, (Babe, as he was known to some of his family) was born in Bayonne, NJ and resided in Hillside and Elizabeth for most of his life. He was a Field Engineer for Texaco for 27 years, retiring in 1977. He later worked for the US Postal Service in Kearney retiring in 1986. He was a Member of the Knights of Columbus #3197, The Columbian Seniors and previously of the Italian American Civic Association. Alfred enjoyed driving, attending church, traveling, outings and socializing. He was much loved by his family and many friends.

Alfred was a WWII veteran serving in Italy and France with the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division. After liberating Rome, they moved into France where Alfred was injured during Operation Dragoon on August 15, 1944. He received a Purple Heart and was awarded the Combat Infantrymanís Badge for his valiant efforts. Alfred was very patriotic, saluting the flag daily and offering prayers for those who never came home.

Funeral from the Growney Funeral Home, 1070 North Broad Street, Hillside, NJ on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 9:30 am. The Funeral Mass will be offered at St. James Church, Springfield, NJ at 11:00 am. Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Alfredís name to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or American Diabetes Association.
